As much as most of us relish summer and some warm weather, we do have to approach it responsibly. We now know that sun damage is bad for our skin and overall health so there is no excuse for it. That said, we also need to the vitamin D that sunshine gives us so avoiding it altogether isn’t recommended either. Instead, what we need to do is take steps to make sure that we enjoy sunshine responsibly and look after our health.
Going Out Into The Sunshine
If you are going to go out in the sun then make sure you take some precautions. For example, you should try and avoid sitting out in the sunshine during the afternoon when the sun is at its hottest. You should also wear clothing that can be adjusted to cover up your skin if need be. You also want to ensure that you don’t get too warm in order to avoid sunstroke. Always wear a hat!
Protecting Our Skin
Of course, you are going to want to go outside and there are going to be parts of your skin that are exposed. Without a doubt you need to make sure that you invest in sunscreen. The biggest mistake people make with sunscreen is not applying it often enough. We assume that putting it on in the morning is enough to protect us all day. However this is not the case at all. Actually what we need to do is reapply it every few hours, especially if we have been swimming. Sunscreen also goes out of date, so make sure you buy new bottles every summer.
Children
Young children love the sunshine and their health will benefit from it. However, their skin is delicate and the sun can really burn them. Make sure that you get sunscreen appropriate for children. You should apply this all over and not just the areas which you think will be exposed to the sunshine. Read the instructions of the sunscreen that you buy and make sure you follow any re-application guidelines too – you can never be too over cautious!
Reversing Damage
If you get mild sun damage then you are susceptible to sun spots. These are dark spots in your skin that can appear anywhere. You should get these checked out to make sure they’re not a serious concern. If they end up being just sun spots then they’re not dangerous but they are unsightly. Firstly you can try investing in lightening creams. These generally need to be used over a number of weeks but can prove very effective. There are also homemade remedies that you can which make a massive difference. Lemon or onion juice applied straight to the skin for example.
Just wash off after 10 minutes and apply plenty of moisturiser afterwards. There are also much more serious treatments such as laser therapy and chemical peels which could be considered too. Of course you should give serious thought before you go down this route.
