The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services has announced that a recall of salad greens from lēf Farms, initiated on May 5, has been canceled. The recall was prompted by concerns over a potential E. coli contamination. However, further analysis revealed that the initial lab results were inaccurate, and the products were deemed safe for consumption.
The recall notice had affected Hannaford and Market Basket supermarkets in multiple states, including Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The announcement from the health department brings relief to consumers who were worried about the safety of the salad greens.
The inaccurate lab results led to the mistaken belief that the salad greens were contaminated. However, upon closer examination, it was discovered that the control sample and the lēf Farms sample were nearly identical. This indicated a contamination error within the lab itself, rather than an actual problem with the products.
Tricia Tilley, Director of the Division of Public Health Services, apologized to lēf Farms, their customers, and the public for the incident. She expressed her commitment to implementing corrective actions to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The health department is now working in collaboration with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to determine the source of the contamination and will make the necessary changes to protocols to prevent such errors from happening again.
