Intense brain stimulation is best for mental illness, A new study revealed that patient with mental illness who are unable to counter the normal mental therapies can be improved through out source powered electrodes implanted in their brains through surgical procedure.
This technique is done through a device called Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) and it will use a device which delivers low and steady electrical charges to specific moods controlling brain part, this device uses nearly same working technique as a pacemaker.
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) has already approved by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 1997 for the treatments of essential tremor, Parkinson’s disease, dystonia and movement disorders. This device is used to treat psychiatric patients only few times by some scientists.
This study is published in the Archives of General Psychiatry’s online edition. This study is done on 17 patients in which 10 patients have major depressive disorder with high risk of suicide and 7 were having bipolar II disorder, all the patients have already tired the conventional methods of treatment which includes psychiatric medications, electroconvulsive therapy and psychotherapy with no notable results.
“Their lives were typically burdened with deep feelings of detachment like being in muck, you can’t move; you can’t connect. You feel like you’ve done something wrong and you want to be dead.” said Dr. Helen Mayberg, theEmoryUniversityneurologist and leader of this study.
The Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery is done on a tiny size brain structure recognized as area 25. The same area was identified by Mayberg which controls our moods, known as “ringleader”. Mayberg with latest and powerful technology studied that Area 25 is on high in depressed patients and by a small electrical charge this area can become normal active.
